What is this?
American writer Sidney Sheldon once noted that "Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life."
But today, many of those sources of imagination and inspiration are at risk of censorship–and even closure.
The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County will focus on those critical issues now facing public and school libraries. The featured speaker is Jamie LaRue, Executive Director, Garfield County Libraries. While director of the Douglas County Libraries, LaRue responded to 250 challenges (attempts to remove or restrict access to library resources). As Executive Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, he oversaw another 1,000 reports of censorship attempts nationwide, including packed public meetings and a campaign to force the library to restrict or remove specific titles. Prior to the presentation and beginning at 11:15 am, the League will host a social time and short business meeting. The speaker will present from 12n to 1:00 pm and this will be recorded and posted to our website.
